Saint Michael the Archangel is one of the most revered angels in Christianity. His name means: "Who is like God?"

This is both a question and a battle cry against pride and rebellion.

Who Is Saint Michael?

Saint Michael is one of the chief angels mentioned in Scripture. He is traditionally regarded as:

• Defender of God's people
• Leader of the heavenly armies
• Protector of the Church
• Champion against Satan and evil spirits
• Guardian of souls

The Catholic Church honors him as an Archangel.

Saint Michael in the Bible

In the Book of Daniel, Michael is described as a great prince who protects God's people:

"At that time shall Michael rise up, the great prince, who standeth for the children of thy people..."

— Daniel 12:1

In the New Testament, Michael appears in the heavenly battle described in Revelation:

"And there was a great battle in heaven, Michael and his angels fought with the dragon..."

— Revelation 12:7

The dragon is identified as Satan, who is cast down from heaven.

The Defeat of Satan

Christian art often depicts Saint Michael:

• Wearing armor
• Carrying a sword or spear
• Standing upon a dragon or demon
• Triumphing over evil

The dragon represents Satan and the forces opposed to God.

One of the most famous paintings is by Guido Reni, showing Saint Michael standing victoriously over the defeated devil.

The Saint Michael Prayer

After a vision concerning attacks on the Church, Pope Leo XIII composed the famous prayer:

Saint Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle.

Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;

and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,

by the power of God,

cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits

who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Feast Day

The Church celebrates the Feast of the Archangels:

• Saint Michael the Archangel
• Saint Gabriel the Archangel
• Saint Raphael the Archangel

on September 29.

Why Catholics Love Saint Michael

Saint Michael symbolizes:

• Courage in the face of evil
• Loyalty to God
• Protection in spiritual battles
• Victory of good over evil

For sacred art and devotional products, Saint Michael is one of the most powerful and dramatic subjects in Christian tradition—a heavenly warrior whose battle cry reminds every believer that no one is like God.
