Collection: Saint Francis of Assisi (Receiving the Stigmata), 1600's COLLECTION

This Masterpiece is a touching painting of St. Francis in a grotto on Mount La Verna, where he received the stigmata, shown as protruding nails, in conformity with written Franciscan manuscripts.  His eyes are very realistic, and he is showing obvious emotion, true to the Baroque style, as he looks upon the crucified Jesus.

The original "Saint Francis of Assisi" was painted in the early 1600's by Federico Barocci.  The  original is presently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
